20.3 – Devotion

What’s the best news you’ve ever received? What’s the worst news you’ve ever received?

The Book of 1 Samuel is full of good and bad news. Hannah received exciting news when she found out that God gave her the children she had prayed for! Samuel received great news when he learned that God was calling him to be a prophet. Eli received horrible news when he found out that the Philistines took away the ark of the covenant (God’s throne), but Israel received amazing news when they learned that the Philistines returned it to them!

Since Samuel was a prophet, it was his job to bring news to Israel from God. The news was great when he got to share about the blessings and gifts that Israel would receive from God! The news was not so great when he had to tell about the punishment that Israel would receive because they disobeyed God.

Samuel was one of many prophets God sent to His people. Each prophet carried different news, but all their news pointed forward to Jesus’ birth, life, and death. Nowadays, God doesn’t send us prophets. Jesus already came to earth, died for our sins, and rose again. Our sins have already been paid for, and God has already prepared a home for us in heaven! Instead of giving us a prophet, God gave us a book, the Bible, to tell us the Good News. Every time you read the Bible, you get to hear the truth about our Savior once again! It’s written down, and it will never change. That’s awesome news!

  1. Have you received any good news recently? Thank God for the blessings He gives us!
  2. What Good News does the Bible tell?
  3. How can you share the Good News of the Bible with others?

Let’s pray:

Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. Thank You for writing it down in the Bible so we can always read and hear the Good News. Help us to share this Good News with everyone we meet. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
