What are some reasons you would write a letter? We don’t write letters often these days, but you might on a special occasion. You could write someone a birthday card or a postcard from a vacation. Maybe you write your relatives or friends a letter to update them on how you’re doing.

In the days of the Early Church, writing letters was the only way to talk to people unless you were physically with them. This was one way that the disciples shared God’s Word with churches and Christians. Many of their letters are God’s true Word and are included in the Bible.

When you write a letter, you as the author decide what to write and how to write it. The letters the disciples wrote were written in a little bit different way from this. Even though the apostles wrote the words down, God told them what to write. We don’t know exactly how this happened, but we do know the words were not their own—they were God’s. God chose the disciples for this task and gave them wisdom through the Holy Spirit.

Because these letters are the true Word of God, we have a lot to learn from them! The author of Hebrews writes that God’s Word is “living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword” (Hebrews 4:12). God’s Word has power! It gives us life by proclaiming we are saved through Jesus’ death and resurrection.
