61.1 – Devotion

What kinds of things are you good at? You might be talented in sports or academics. Or maybe music or art. We all have different gifts that we’re strong at doing. On the flip side, we also all have things that we’re not so strong with. Everyone needs help sometimes, and there are plenty of people willing to help. Whether it’s help from a friend, a parent, or a teacher, having those helpers around is important to us doing well.

There’s one helper who’s more powerful than anyone else: God. Specifically, God the Holy Spirit. Other people can help us do homework or lift heavy things, but only the Holy Spirit can help save us. While He was on earth, Jesus told His disciples that God the Father would send the Helper, the Holy Spirit. And He did, on the day of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit filled each of the apostles, and He fills us today in our lives too.

The Holy Spirit helps us in all things. He helps us learn and remember what Jesus taught us, He helps us share the Good News of Jesus with others, and most important, He helps us to have faith. On our own, our sinful nature doesn’t let us have faith. We cannot do anything by ourselves, no matter how hard we try. Thankfully, our God is much stronger. Through God the Holy Spirit, we can have faith and believe in Jesus and what He has done for us. Through that faith, we are saved from our sins and can share God’s Good News with the whole world.

  1. How does the Holy Spirit help us?
  2. Why can’t we have faith on our own?
  3. What images come to mind when you think of the Holy Spirit? Why?

Let’s pray:

Holy Spirit, thank You for living in us and giving us faith. Please help us to hear God’s Word, to remember what it says, and to share God’s Word with those around us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
