21.K – Devotion

Have you ever used a microscope? Scientists created this powerful tool to help us look at some amazing things that we wouldn’t otherwise get to see! Microscopes can show you details of the tiniest creatures that God made. They won’t be any help if you’re focused on the wrong things, though! If you align it incorrectly, you’ll just get a close-up view of a blank space.

God made Saul the king of Israel, and he could have done some amazing things for God’s people! Unfortunately, he was usually focused on the wrong things. When Samuel anointed him king, he almost missed out because he was so focused on finding his dad’s donkeys! He was so focused on winning battles that he disrespected God and he made bad decisions that hurt his soldiers. This led to God rejecting Saul as king. Saul was so focused on being the best and the most famous that he spent all his time and energy trying to hurt David.

It’s easy for us to focus on the wrong things. We focus on being popular and being liked, and we hurt our friends and family. We focus on getting money and cool stuff, and we forget about God and His amazing gifts. Whenever we lose our focus, God is right there to align our microscope for us. He gives us the Bible, pastors, teachers, and other Christians to remind us that God is all we need. He is the only one who can satisfy us, and we will find true joy only when we focus on Him.

  1. What are some “wrong things” that won’t bring you true joy or satisfaction?
  2. Who reminds you to focus on God?
  3. How does God help us find true joy when we still live in a broken, sin-filled world?

Let’s pray:

Dear God, thank You for giving us true joy. We confess that we forget about Your gifts and focus on the wrong things too often. Please help us to focus on You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
