28.4 – Devotion

Throughout history, there have been hundreds of kings and queens—some still reign today. Kings and queens of the past often had great power over their countries and all their people. While they should have used this power to do good, many monarchs took advantage of their power. Consider the kings of Israel, for example. When Israel was divided into two kingdoms, Israel and Judah, God said all the kings of Israel were wicked, since they served false gods instead of Him. These selfish kings focused on worldly things like wealth and power instead of the one true God. They led their people away from God instead of encouraging them to worship Him. They sinned time and time again and refused to listen to God or His prophets.

Thankfully, we are not ruled by the wicked kings of Israel. In fact, our ruler isn’t even on earth. We are ruled by our heavenly King—Jesus Christ, the King of kings. Being the King of kings means Jesus doesn’t just rule over a country, He rules over everything, including kings themselves. There is no higher authority than Him. Jesus is all-powerful, or omnipotent, and He uses His power to save us from our sins and welcome us into His heavenly kingdom. Because He is our King and has done great things for us, we can obey, serve, and praise Him.
