25.1 – Devotion

How long is your attention span? Can you pay attention to one thing with no breaks for half an hour? fifteen minutes? five? the length of this devotion? We have so many things to do, and we can easily get distracted by bells and whistles all over the place instead of focusing on what we should be doing. This can become a problem at school or at work, or when something just simply needs to be done. More important, this is a problem when our focus gets pulled from the one place it needs to be—God.

Our lives are so busy we may say we just don’t have time for God. We skip reading our Bible because we’re too busy. We forget to pray because there are too many other things on our mind. Going to church for worship might become a chore instead of a joy. Our minds and hearts are in other places instead of focusing on our Father and Savior.

But that’s not what God tells us to do. In Luke 11:28, Jesus says, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” We need to hear God’s Word—by going to church, reading the Bible—and following its guidance! God tells us to always put Him first because He is what we really need. Only God can provide us with what we need to live, to be content, and to be forgiven. When we are sorry for our sins and ask God for forgiveness, He gives it to us freely and lovingly. Because God loves us, He is worthy of our thanks, praise, and full attention.

  1. What distracts you from God?
  2. How can you limit your distractions and put God first?
  3. What are the benefits of hearing and obeying God’s Word?

Let’s pray:

Dear God, You have told us to put You first in our lives. We have sinned by letting ourselves be distracted by worldly things and worries. Please forgive us of our sins and help us to put You first in everything we do. In Your name we pray. Amen.
